Bank of England Interest Rate Down to 0.5%

As widely expected the Bank of England today cut interest rates to 0.5%.

Savers not on fixed rate deals will see their returns fall especially if they stick with their existing bank or building society rather than looking for higher rate deals that are available.

See moneyjungle.net for advice on how to find the best savings account for you.

The banks have up to now not taken account of interest rate cuts in the rates charged for borrowing on personal loans or on credit cards. Again the advice must be to shop around for the best deals.

See the moneyjungle savings and personal finance section for advice on choosing a credit card and finding a suitable personal loan.

Nationwide to charge for using VISA card outside Europe

Up to now, Nationwide has been one of only a handful of credit and debit card issuers not to charge a fee for using cards abroad. This is about to change if their cards are used outside Europe.

Nationwide points out that when you use a Visa debit card or credit card to make a transaction in certain currencies other than sterling, Visa charge a fee for each transaction and Nationwide currently pays that fee on your behalf.

Nationwide will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit cards and from 1 June 2009 on debit cards. The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.

The good news is that there will still be no fee for using a Nationwide Visa Debit or Credit Card in Europe and even at 1% the fee is much lower than the 2.75% commission typically charged for most cards so Nationwide cards are still a good buy for anyone planning to use their cards abroad, especially in Europe.

Tackling Your Credit Card Debt

Many of us have found our credit card debts are getting out of hand. Banks have increased interest rates on outstanding balances despite the recent cuts in the Bank of England base rate.

Now is probably a good time to look to transferring the outstanding balance to a card offering interest free credit. You will have to pay a transfer fee but the savings can make all the difference. The trick is to then look to save up during the interest free period so that you can pay off the balance - or alternatively look to take advantage of another interest free transfer offer. But to ensure things do not get out of hand do not be tempted to use your new card for purchases just use it to take advantage of the interest free period.

But be careful, the credit card companies have become much more cautious in issuing cards and being turned down could affect your credit report. So check your credit report for free first by taking advantage of a free trial offer from CreditExpert. You can get FREE and unlimited real-time online access to your credit report for the trial period. You will also receive advice and tips on how to improve their credit rating and alerts anytime their credit report changes.

Then shop around for the best credit card transfer offer. We currently like the Virgin Card offering

High Credit Card Interest Rates

Credit card companies have not passed on recent interest rate cuts to customers, in fact many credit card issuers have increased rates in recent months. Interest rates vary from just over 6% to over 30% a year with some store cards charging even more.

The card companies are also now much more selective in who they will offer cards with lower rates to. The card company will check your credit report before deciding if you qualify for their card or, in some cases may actually offer you a card but at a higher interest rate if the credit report shows any county court judgements of even missed payments on loans or credit cards.

Now you can see the information the credit card companies look at. Click here for your free Experian credit report.

Wrapit Customers Unlikely to Get Money Back

The Wrapit Gift List Company collapse has left brides without gifts and the purchasers unlikely to receive any compensation except those paying by credit card who can claim from the card issuer provided the purchase was over £100.

This highlights the dangers of buying on line or by telephone. It is generally safer to pay by credit card, debit cards do not carry the same protection. This should also be borne in mind when paying for air fares or holiday accomodation. It may be tempting to avoid the surcharge for creditcard payments but you also lose the protection offered for credit card transactions. Bearing in mind that worldwide 25 airlines have gone to the wall so far in 2008 it may well be worth paying the surcharge for the peace of mind this provides.

Refused Credit? No need to Panic!

Rejection rates for credit card applications are running at 18,000 a day, says one report – but the truth about credit is more complicated than headlines suggest. If you are among those who have been refused credit recently or if you are thinking of applying for credit soon, there is no need to panic - take action instead.
