Prepaid cards

There has been a lot of publicity recently regarding the advantages of using a prepaid foreign exchange card for debit payments and cash withdrawals whilst abroad. More recently there has also been the announcement by popular budget airline Ryanair that, from 1st January, Visa credit card (and now Visa Electron card) payments will no longer be free to pay for flights. In fact, the only way to pay for flights using a card and not incur the £5+ booking charge per ticket is to use a prepaid Mastercard.

Electron users will face the same £5 charge for each journey on all flights booked using a credit or debit cards, and the charge is per passenger so two people booking return flights face charges of £20 even if the flights are part of a single transaction.
