Set Up Your Own Bank - Be A Zopa Lender

Zopa is the online marketplace where people meet to lend and borrow money. The easiest way to describe it is like eBay for money - lenders lend money, borrowers borrow money, and by cutting out the banks, everyone gets a better deal.

If you’re looking for a loan, you will get a competitive rate and Zopa do not have any sneaky fees or penalties if you want to repay early. Plus, you get that warm feeling inside, knowing that your repayments are helping real people rather than the fat cats.

Or, if you have got some spare cash and fancy making a return, why not try lending at Zopa? Zopa credit-score and risk assess every borrower, you can lend each borrower as little as 10 pounds to minimise risk and all payments are collected on your behalf.

Should I move my savings to Ireland?

The Irish government announced this week that it will guarantee 100% of savings with Irish Banks.

It is reported that already UK savers are switching to Irish based accounts.

However, already the first £35,000 of deposits with a UK bank are guaranteed which means £70,000 for couple and the UK government is considering raising this to £50,000. In practice the government has acted to protect savings above this through nationisation as in the case of Northern Rock or by brokering a takeover, as with HBOS.

As always the best advice is probably to spread your savings around but switching to Irish banks may give peace of mind although it is reported that the Irish government may face a challenge to the legality of the move from EU regulators.

To check how secure your savings are you should be able to find details of protection on the bank’s website. You will also find information on the FSA website.

AOL is offering new subscribers a free £500 Dell laptop. Orange offers £300 off the price of a laptop from PC World.

Of course anyone thinking of signing up for a new broadband service may wish to consider more than just the best introductory offer, for example service speed, download limits and customer satisfaction reports.

An easy way to check is through an online comparison website such as  USwitch or Simplyswitch..

Hotel Room Auction Site

The Internet has revolutionised how most of us book our hotel rooms and made it easy to find discounted rates.

But we like RoomAuction a website that lists hotels with hotel information and their standard rates. All you need to do is decide how much you are willing to pay for a room and make a bid! Hotels are likely to accept any reasonable offers for rooms that they do not expect to be booked. We tested the site this weekend and, although the hotel rejected our bid, they did offer us a £20 discount off the £90 room and breakfast rate that we would have paid had we booked directly with the hotel.
